This past Friday we hit the road on our way to Lugano, Switzerland. Due to the alps being in the way, you need to drive down into Italy, all the way to Milan and then back up to Lugano. It took us about 5 hours. The Mont Blanc tunnel goes through the Alps linking Chamonix, France to the Aosta Valley in Italy. We waited just over an hour in traffic before arriving at the entrance of the tunnel. The tunnel is 11.6 kilometers long (7.25 miles), costs 33.20 euro ($43.86) for a one way ticket and it took us 13 minutes and 54 seconds to drive through the tunnel. Due to a fire in 1999, one of the safety regulations requires that cars keep 150 meters between each other at all times and drive at a reduced speed.
Tunnels we drove through between our home and Lugano: 28
