Beni Meier celebrates winning the Swiss Pumpkin Championship on October 4 in Seegräben, canton Zurich. Meier's pumpkin weighed in at a mean 640kg, thus setting a new Swiss record. The world record is 766kg. 

Swiss rescue workers are using dogs to look for survivors under the rubble of Padang in Sumatra, which was hit by a massive earthquake on Wednesday

Elephants of Switzerland's national circus Knie take a bath in Lake Geneva near Lausanne on Friday, October 2.

Linda Fäh, a 21-year-old bank employee from St Gallen, was crowned Miss Switzerland 2009 at the Geneva Arena on September 26. Fäh regularly sings in village festivals and says she "has the soul of an artist". During her year-long reign she will be the face of various clothing and cosmetic lines in contracts worth SFr100,000 ($97,300).
